Before/After: These Subway Smart Tiles Are Peel & Stick And Will Elevate Your Rental Kitchen By A Million

Rented homes are tough, and rental kitchens? They can be the worst! Since beginning Roomers, one thing people have consistently asked us about is how they can improve the kitchens in their rental apartments, and while cabinets are a little tricky, one area that is easy to improve is the back splash.

This ‘before’ kitchen was okay to begin with, but there’s lots of room for improvement. Both the cabinets and counter top are laminate but at least they’re white, which gives a good simple, clean palette to work with.

Enter Smart Tiles. These peel and stick panels are the answer to every fugly back splash’s prayers. They’re made from an adhesive substrate topped with a gel component called Gel-O, which gives them that 3D look, and they’re perfectly fine to use behind a stove.

The tile comes in larger panels that you trim to size, and are around $45 for a pack of six. For this area we used around three packs. You can stick the tiles over existing back splash or on a blank wall, as we did here.

The tiles super easy to install and remove, so when you move out the place looks just as it did when you moved in. It took us all of two hours to put them up, and the results turned out pretty fantastic, if we may say so.

Read on to see how we installed.

To begin with, this kitchen was basically a blank canvas. All we had to do was remove the paper towel holder from the wall. You can use Smart Tiles over your existing tile too.

The tile are actually really easy to cut, so tricky areas like outlets aren’t an issue at all.

To make a straight edge, we cut the protruding tile shape. We did some with an exacto knife but then switch to a scissors which worked just as well.

We started at the outer edge that was going to be most visible, and worked our way inwards from there.

It was best to just remove the outlet cover, that way we didn’t have to be to precise when cutting the edges as they are hidden when you put the cover on.

As you work your way across, you may have to fill in some gaps. We simply saved all the trimmed edges as we went along, then cut small squares to fill in any blanks.

The final result! We used some chrome trim at the edge near the window to finish it neatly.

It looks exactly like real tile, so crazy!

The 3D effect of the finish is what gives it a super realistic look.

It’s perfectly fine to use Smart Tiles behind your stove.

This is one of those times we keep going back to the kitchen to marvel at how great the tile looks.
